What Is RSD? Understanding Rejection Sensitivity in ADHD

Rejection Sensitivity Dysphoria (RSD) is when someone experiences intense emotional pain in response to perceived or actual rejection, criticism, or failure. It’s often experienced by ADHD’ers.

It is more intense than feeling a little rejected or temporarily worrying if what you said was ‘ok’ or if what another said was because they don’t like you. It can be debilitating and painful.

While there hasn’t been a lot of research done on this (it’s a tricky one to research) it is suggested that it’s the result of differences in brain structure that make it harder to regulate emotions related to rejection. It is likely also related to the fact that neurodivergent women tend to have higher sensitivity levels and experience the world on a deeper level.

People with RSD may feel overwhelming sadness, anger, disappointment or shame when they sense rejection, even if it’s unintentional or minor.

For some this results in self-doubt, mood changes or avoidance of situations where rejection might occur.

RSD can be really hard for those experiencing it and is a good one to chat to your counsellor/support person about.

Learning strategies and becoming aware of how this is showing up for you can help to reduce the burden.
